Top tips to take great photos of your kids

Preparing for your family photo shoot

Ready for take some great photos of your kids during this social distancing time?

I’m sharing all my best tips to help you get some really great shots of your kids.

You don’t need a fancy camera, so just grab your phone and go for it!  Happy snapping!

TIP 1: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LIGHT

*Natural light is the most flattering light. so turn off your flash! Inside, have your kid facing a window or sitting in an open doorway for the best results.

*Avoid harsh light. If the sun makes a rare appearance, look for the shade of a tree for more flattering light. Would you believe that a cloudy, grey sky can actually be good for photos,   as you don’t get nasty shadows cast on your face?

TIP 2: CHOOSE YOUR MOMENT

*Choose your time wisely! It’s best to try taking photos after a nap and some food, so your kids aren’t hungry or tired!

*Try not to say “cheese” as you will probably end up with a fake smile! For a more natural shot, get them laughing by tickling them or telling a joke.

*For candid shots, why not get them doing something that they enjoy like baking or painting? That can be the perfect time for a happy shot!

TIP 3: FOCUS ON THE EYES

* Get down on their level and remember to focus on their eyes for a really engaging shot.

*Remove any clutter in the background, and try a simple composition without any distractions.

* Your child doesn’t always have to be right in the centre of the photo. Play around with different compositions to create interesting images.

TIP 4: HAVE A LITTLE PATIENCE

*It goes without saying that you need to have a bucket load of patience to take good photos of your kids!

*Kids have a short attention span. If they get tired or bored, jump around or sing a silly song to keep them engaged.  Lots of energy is required!

*If your kids aren’t co-operating, get some candid shots and try to shoot the in- between moments. Try to capture the cute things that they do.

TIP 5: JUST GET THE SHOT

* I’ve heard someone saying the best camera you have is the one you have on you. So grab your iPhone and capture the moment.

*Capture the cuteness of your kids being natural, just being themselves, enjoying their favourite ice-lolly. Perfect!

There you have it! I hope you have enjoyed these tips and feel inspired to pick up your phone and take some photos!
